Q: I have a Lexus LX 450 SUV. What are the basics I need to know when adding car audio?
Everything about the car audio is stock. I want to add better quality bass. Subwoofer? What do I need to know about adding a subwoofer and better sound? I am trying to remain thrifty, so please keep that in mind. Thanks!

A: Ya I would leave this one up to a pro. Luxury cars have changed their audio format over the past decade. Instead of the radio and preamp being in one unit in the dash they are using the on-board computer as the radio and amp. Usually what you think is the radio in your dash (now-a-days) is really a command screen connected to the cars computer.

Q: Problem with noise from head unit?
I hooked up my Alpine 9883 head unit to my Lexus LX 450 1997. The groundmetal hookup is all fine. The problem exists where the head unit is positioned. I hear whiney buzzing sounds when the head unit is positioned in a certain angle/way. When I loosened the screws to loosen up the headunits grip with the dash, the sound disappears. But eventually the sound re-emerged after a couple hours due to, I think, gravity repositioning the the head unit. I already wrapped the screws with electrical tape to insulate any electrical conductivity. Help! Thanks

A: i had the same problem, wrapped in tape, glass and lead. nothing worked. pulled it out of the dash 1 inch and the problem went away. good luck, but i think u will be frustrated.

Q: Do I really need new speakers?
I have a Lexus LX 450 1997, and I have one subwoofer installed. I recently installed an Alpine CDA 9883 head unit. I have factory speakers and amp. My Alpine head unit achieves a very treble sound. Because I already have a subwoofer, I have good lows as well. I feel as if the songs do not sound very "full", as if the mids are missing. I already configured the sound settings in hopes of resolving this problem, but it still sounds the same. I spoke to a Crutchfield technician, and he told me that I should hook up a separate RCA to my subwoofer instead of hooking up the subwoofer to the head unit, and that I should be able to hear more bass and mids in my songs. (right now I am able to change the subwoofer level when I change the bass control) Bottom line: I want to achieve a full sound in my songs, but all I'm hearing is high treble and strong lows (from my subs). What can I do? (I hooked up sub to the headunit where the subs are controlled through the bass control - prob?

A: I would just buy a good pair of 3 or4 way component speakers to replace your old ones. You don't want your subs hitting on anything but bass because that is not what they are designed for. Wal mart actually sells decent component sets in many sizes for very reasonable prices. The x-plods and pioneers are actually decent with just the wattage from your head unit.

Q: Do I need a head unit?
Do I really need a head unit for the subs to work? I have a 1997 Lexus LX 450. If I do, then which ones are recommended and not too expensive?

A: you don't necessarily NEED a new head unit in order for your subs to work...BUT...having an aftermarket head unit with a higher voltage preout to feed signal to your subs' amp will definitely increase the sound quality. most factory decks put out between 5-10 watts per channel. the amplified stock systems can range from 10 to about 25 or 30 watts per channel. an aftermarket deck can easily exceed the power levels of most stock systems therefore giving you a little more overall volume off the bat at a lower volume level due to the increased power output. eg...the stock deck at 50 when the aftermarket one's at 25. also most aftermarket decks will have some sort of dedicated sub preout that can be controlled right through the deck itself. if you go with a LOC (line output converter) and want front-seat-adjustability you will probably need to buy a control knob as well that will have to go in-line with the RCAs to your amp. this is not necessarily a bad thing but the more things you have in-line... the more the sound quality can suffer from signal losses due to a higher level of resistance in the signal path.

Q: My First Car...?
I'm recieving my dad's huge Lexus LX 450 as my first car. I need a good nickname. All I can think of to name it is Lexie and thats a little too girly for me. Any suggestions?
